Towering Tall: The Earthbound Sentinel

Towering Tall: The Earthbound Sentinel

In the Warhost compendium, Earthbound Sentinels are described as towering constructs, humanoid in form but far larger than any living Dwarf. They stand 10 to 12 feet tall, with broad shoulders and a heavy, muscular frame that conveys equal parts immense strength and deliberate craftsmanship.

The Sentinel is formed entirely from enchanted stone, shaped by force, craft, and runic earth magic rather than delicate carving. This is not armour worn over a frame, nor stone fitted around metal, but a single unified body awakened through runic earth magic. A faint inner glow burns within the stone itself, animating the construct and binding it to its purpose.

As with all Dwarven craft, the magic that empowers the Earthbound Sentinel is restrained and controlled by strict tradition. This is power used as a tool, not a spectacle. The Sentinel exists to fulfil a role, and it does so without hesitation or doubt.

The Earthbound Sentinel stands awakened. Carved from enchanted stone and bound by runic magic, it towers over the Dwarven host as a silent guardian.

Faces of Stone

One of the most striking features of the Earthbound Sentinel is its faceplate. Each is a smooth, polished stone surface that glows dimly when the construct is roused for battle. Some Sentinels bear stylised helms carved to resemble fearsome Dwarven warriors, expressing the martial pride and cultural traditions of their originators. Others are more austere in design, reduced to narrow slits for eyes and minimal ornamentation.

Regardless of these variations, all Earthbound Sentinels share the same unnerving presence. There is no expression to read and no emotion to interpret.

Although carved from solid stone, their movements are surprisingly fluid. Enchanted joints allow the Sentinel to advance with steady inevitability, not as a lumbering statue but as a carefully engineered creation. Every step is deliberate. Every motion is exact.

Their massive arms, hewn from the same rune-bound stone as their bodies, are marked with Dwarven sigils of strength and endurance. When an Earthbound Sentinel strikes, it does so with crushing finality.

Runes glow faintly across the Sentinel’s polished stone faceplate. Whether stylised in the likeness of a Dwarven warrior or cut to austere utility, every visage is unique.

The Sculpt

Paul Hicks has captured all of this character and weight perfectly in the sculpt.

The model feels grounded and monumental. The stone surfaces are textured and purposeful, with subtle variation that suggests both age and craftsmanship. Nothing feels ornamental for its own sake. Every plane, curve, and rune serves the impression of something forged to endure.

The Sentinel looks as though it belongs deep within a Dwarven hold, standing silent beside rune-carved pillars until it is called forth by oath and necessity. It feels as much an artefact as a weapon, created by tradition as much as by magic.

Mass and permanence define the Earthbound Sentinel. Seen alongside Dwarven warriors, its true scale becomes clear, a living monument forged to endure when flesh and steel fail.

The Earthbound Sentinel in Warhost

On the tabletop, the Earthbound Sentinel represents something rare among the Dwarves. A Large creature that embodies their mastery of stone, animated via magic.

In Warhost, the Sentinel provides a powerful centrepiece for Dwarven forces. It supports their defining strengths: resilience, discipline, and the ability to withstand unrelenting pressure. Where living warriors might tire or be driven back, the Sentinel advances until its task is complete.

It also reflects an important truth of Dwarven culture. While many Dwarves are deeply wary of magic, they will embrace it when it is bound, regulated, and necessary.

Though hewn from solid stone, the Earthbound Sentinel moves with deliberate precision. Enchanted joints and careful craftsmanship allow the construct to advance with relentless inevitability.

What This Means for the Dwarves

The completion of the Earthbound Sentinel sculpt constitutes a significant step forward for the Dwarven range. Alongside warriors, archers, the command group, and the latest reinforcements, this construct starts to show the full breadth of what the Dwarves can bring to the battlefield. The Sentinel is not deployed lightly, but when it is awakened, it changes the shape of the battle.

With Paul Hicks continuing to sculpt the range, and more reveals still to come, the Dwarves are steadily becoming one of the most characterful and distinctive forces in Warhost.

Looking Ahead

We have a wealth of photographs to share of the Earthbound Sentinel, and this will not be the last time you see it. Painting, tabletop appearances, and further development are all in the pipeline.

For now, this reveal acts as a clear signal.

The forges still burn.
The guilds still stand.
And the mountains themselves are beginning to move.

Nice, I just recently finished 3d printing a dwarf host. I plan to add a golem soon, but shamefully the model I’m planning to print has a less impressive sculpt.
