The Reckoners of the Circle are the practical officers of law, order, and continuity in the Age of Fractured Crowns.
Their authority does not come from divine power or arcane mastery. It comes from function. From what they do and what people accept, they represent.
A Reckoner carries the authority of the Circle into the world. They witness oaths, record agreements, seal compacts, and ensure that what is agreed in one place can be recognised and enforced elsewhere.
They also deal with realities most people would rather avoid. They mark boundaries. They oversee burial and the handling of the dead after battle. They stabilise situations where fear might turn into panic or violence. They bring structure to places where things are starting to come apart.
After the Sundering of the Saelith, this role became essential. People needed clear rules for what was safe, what was forbidden, and what to do when something felt wrong. Reckoners provide that framework. Not because they have all the answers, but because they give communities something solid to act on.
In war, they travel with forces as witnesses, enforcers of discipline, and custodians of consequence. They ensure that actions taken can still be justified afterwards, that bodies are dealt with properly, and that oaths made in the field still carry weight when the fighting ends.
They are not always liked. They can be severe, inflexible, and feared. But they are necessary. In a fractured world, someone has to decide what counts, what holds, and what endures.
That is what a Reckoner does.
